News from the Control Tower: Our weekly curated list of news stories affecting you and your finances.
In a recent post I alluded to some of the legal problems AI has ahead of it: this week I include a few more. One story is about OpenAI not wanting to reveal its sources to EU regulators (hint: they would open the company up to copyright infringement lawsuits). Another item showcases the trouble a lawyer got into when using ChatGPT to write his legal brief: the system entirely fabricated legal quotes and precedents. The judge was not happy.
Other people having legal troubles are Hyundai and Kia. Neither installed anti-theft software in their vehicles (which is not legally required btw), but so-called Kia Boyz on TikTok teach viewers how to exploit this weakness, leading to a rash of car thefts. Should Hyundai and Kia be responsible for this? I think it’s an interesting question.
On a side note, I listened to this podcast-version of this "Kia Boyz" story on a recent road trip, and the poor woman they featured had had her car stolen over and over again. It really sounded miserable.
Next is an interesting op-ed on a potential reason we’ve seen prices spike at the grocery store lately: reduced competition as the grocery market consolidated.
Finally, I’ve included a story about a World War II veteran who recently celebrated his 100th birthday. My own grandfather also fought in France in World War II, but he passed away before I was born. I was happy to see this family cherishing their loved ones.
Hope you all had a nice Memorial Day weekend. –Amanda Vaught
